I illustrious that this is the only Bond film of the entire series that, to date, has not received a single 1-star review here on Amazon. That’s ravishing dang safe!

Director Terrence Young had introduced us to Bond in DR. NO and FROM RUSSIA WITH Esteem. Guy Hamilton then took us down the GOLDFINGER road, and while his attention to action made that the first Demolish Bond film, he also seemed to lose alot of the more down-to-earth flavor that made the first two Bonds so mighty better.
But, Terrence Young returned for his final Bond film, and somehow managed to provide the perfect mesh of the realistic Bond from the first two films, and the more action-oriented Bond of GOLDFINGER. The result is a very jubilant marriage indeed – it’s honest too unpleasant there were very few legitimate children born of it!

THUNDERBALL contains all the mountainous locales, villains, and Bond coolness that we worship, without getting into the ridiculous, gadget-filled territory of the later films. It introduces us to our first proper Bond femme fatale, and also gives us the first really gripping Bond girl in Claudine Auger’s Domino character.
The music in the movie by John Barry is very nice, high-lighting the slower meander of remarkable of the film. This movie is longer than the previous three by almost 20 minutes, and it is a nice extra cushion to really effect the tension. In fact, Bond is largely absent from the first 45 minutes of the movie, and we finally recognize more of the villians plans – what they are and how they are being accomplished – in almost meticulous detail. Somehow, this makes the threat more staunch. Speaking of the threat, the state being about terrorists stealing nukes and demanding ransom to prevent blowing up an undesignated city, is as unusual as today’s headlines!
The only actual gripe that can be levied at the film is that Connery does indeed seem a small less keen in the role than he had been. I mediate he’s unexcited mostly on track here, but he’s missing the total devotion that he showed in the first three films.
That aside, THUNDERBALL is simply the best Bond – offering everything that makes Bond expansive, and eliminating all the over-the-top sillieness that made the later films so excruciating to sit through!
THUNDERBALL (1965) the fourth of the James Bond 007 series is among the best of the films. As a follow-up to the phenomenally successful and definitive GOLDFINGER, THUNDERBALL is unprejudiced a shade less satisfying. In terms of tone and composition the two films are of an era in the James Bond mythology.

Sean Connery returns as the inimitable British Secret Agent, this time state against SPECTRE Agent Number Two, Largo (Adolfo Celi) . SPECTRE has stolen an atomic bomb and is holding the world hostage.
Largo is a pleasurable adversary. Strongly-built, silver-haired, wearing an eyepatch, and more physically intimidating than Gert Frobe’s stout Goldfinger, Celi’s Largo lacks the faintly tongue-in-cheek air which keen Goldfinger’s behavior. In fact, the entire film lacks the decidedly comical undertone of GOLDFINGER. The villains are more vicious, and Connery’s Bond, his wit more honed than ever, is playing for keeps.
The theme song (with Tom Jones singing), space and tale are at least on a par with the predecessor film; however, the action, based in the Caribbean, takes region largely around, and under, water, and the film drags deplorably during most of the underwater sequences despite the fact that one of these is the climactic fight scene. The change in tempo between land and undersea action is jarring and detracts from the movie in a manner that its innate excellence in other respects cannot compensate.

Of course, Bond successfully seduces objective about every woman on the situation (except for Miss Moneypenny, the Penelope of the series) . While he is able to fetch an ally in Domino (Claudine Auger), he is less successful with others, though as he admits, after all, it is “all for King and Country.” What a sense of selfless sacrifice the man has!
THUNDERBALL was later remade as NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN in which Connery, smooth smart, fit, and feisty (but with toupee) returned to the James Bond role after more than a decade’s hiatus. The remake is gigantic to peep as a counterpoint to the fresh.
While THUNDERBALL is not as considerable fun as GOLDFINGER, if all subsequent Bond films could have been as obliging as THUNDERBALL, even Timothy Dalton would have been a tolerable 007. Let’s give this one FOUR AND A HALF STARS.

If you’re old enough to have seen the “Carry On” movies the first time around, or have watched them on DVD on “oldies night”, (don’t worry, we’re not going to ask your age) you’ll see the resemblance to this funny take on the world’s greatest lover. Slapstick, double entendres and misunderstandings abound, as Heath Ledger tries to fill the trousers of the legendary lothario without getting a broken back in the process.

It takes place in 1753 in Venice, a time when no woman is safe from the charms of Casanova, not even those confined to the convent. Luckily for him he has friends in the right places and escapes being strung up for debauchery (a big word which in the movie means that he shakes a lot of bedsprings without the benefit of a marriage license)
After going one conquest too far, his friend the Doge insists that Casanova get married ASAP, or face exile from Venice. Exile is not a possibility, as we learn early in the movie that he has a very good reason for sticking around, so marriage it is, and the lady to whom he pledges his troth is not only a virgin, but extremely willing to be wed. In a classic case of bad timing, he then meets the one woman worthy of his affection, and she turns out to be a cross-dressing (but only when necessary to prove a point) feminist writer who hates every bone in his body. She unfortunately is betrothed to a corpulent but very wealthy lard merchant (Oliver Platt) whom she has never set eyes on before, the union having being arranged by her late father as an insurance policy for the family fortune.

If you’re still with me after all that, things get even more complicated when Jeremy Irons shows up as Inquisitor Pucci, out for the bewigged head of Casanova as a gift for the hangman’s noose.
The important thing is not to attempt to take this movie seriously as a period piece, or as a factual account of the life of Casanova. It is a historically set spoof of the life and especially the times of Casanova and should be taken with a pinch of salt – or was that lard?
Amanda Richards, July 10, 2006
This is the first of Hallstrom’s films that I’ve seen, and I gather it’s by no means typical of his recent work. However, I found it immensely entertaining. It bears little reference to the Chevalier de Seingalt’s life, but once you’ve got over that (ideally before you see it) it is highly enjoyable. The imaginative and brilliant photography of a Venice peopled with the colourful characters and costumes of the ridotto in the city’s heyday makes the film worth seeing for that alone. Venice should always look this good; its inhabitants should always wear the costume of this period.
Then the acting is good and plausible. I spent some time trying to work out who it was that Heath Ledger reminded me of, and eventually realised that it was Russell Crowe, not so much in looks as something about his manner. Jeremy Irons is hilarious and others well up to par. The film was well-paced, building to a comic finale.
I think the great point is to grasp that the whole thing was clearly conceived as a sort of Commedia dell’Arte, knockabout farce with very little sex but plenty of misunderstandings, mistaken identities and laugh-out-loud moments. And, of course, love. I thought it was made in very much the manner that operas like The Marriage of Figaro or The Barber of Seville would have been conceived and performed in when they first came out – in fact it shed new light on those for me.
Not a great film – it’s a bit too slight for that – but a good, well-made, highly enjoyable romp.

Never before seen in color, Season 2 has been colorfied with the power of computer technology. Season 1 looked extraordinary. Season 2 looks a bit artificial on some of the episodes, but they survey about as top-notch as they did for Season 1 and considering they had to color a massive 38 episodes, that’s quite a feat and I really have nothing to gripe about. A few of the episodes are basic flashbacks from Season 1, which is a bit annoying because they are unbiased recordings from the previous season. Definite there are only a few, but why do episodes that were in the previous season? Very uncommon. Anyway…They are getting very end to really getting those skin tones lawful, and to the naked gape, most won’t know these are artifical colors for the fresh color addition.

Season 2 contains a whopping 38 fantastic episodes in all, one great Season for suitable fans that want to appreciate some serious bright entertainment. As fans know, these timeless episodes have easily withstood the test of time, even here in 2005 I’m loving it all. Season 2 level-headed includes the very humorous antics of Alice Pearce and George Tobias (Kravitz’s) as they reprise their roles as the nosy neighbors across the street. Alice Pearce is a unbelievable actress as her nosy-self impartial makes the series all that more exquisite. Her relationship with her husband reminds me of the “Roepers” from Three’s Company, the crazy one liners from the two will method chuckles every time!
Unfortunately you’ll only be able to delight in her throughout season 2 as she (sadly) does not return for Season 3 and is replaced by a lesser known, so indulge in the very best Mrs. Kravitz now! Alice Pearce (Mrs. Kravitz) developed cancer in the middle of Season 2 and ask you can look by watching, her weight and health deteriorated. She is missing for most of the second 1/2 of the season and they actually saved an earlier episode with her in it to do it for the last one. I for one possess Bewitched would never have been as successful without her in it.

Season 2 also really shines as Marion Lorne (Aunt Clara) is throughout this season and she is astounding. I would have loved to have an Aunt as sweet and silly as her. Sadly, more tragedy. In the actual world, Lorne suffered a massive heart attack during Season 2 and explains her absence the second half of the season. Dick York, the most noted Darrin of them all also suffered “unbeknownst to many” through his life as Darrin. He suffered from a constant abet ailment and it slowly progressed to the point where he simply could not continue his role. York recalls his feelings every day as Darrin. ” “I took wound pills to win to sleep because I didn’t want to go to work the next day exhausted.” York suffered, and suffered, but fans know he never let anyone know, he fought the injure and made everyone laugh, and that’s why he’s so special, he fair wanted to execute people laugh. York finally succombed to lung cancer and passed away in 1992. Sam (Montgomery) life was also nick short due to “colon cancer” and she died at a very youthful 62 years archaic. Objective a microscopic tidbit mark, Montgomery was also a very “avid smoker” and was eminent as smoking during breaks of the prove and was difficult for her not lightup during filming when everyone else on the note usually did. Ok, enough dark stories!
Lookout for Endora and Darrin really battling it out in this stout season. The episode where she turns him into a warewolf on Halloween is priceless entertainment. And I never finish laughing as she detached continues to never remember his name…Darwood, Darwin, Darewood, Damian, David, unbiased simply hilarious. And don’t peril about Dick York (the accepted Darrin of them all) leaving the series anytime soon, even with his inferior befriend, he will be around for several more DVD packs, specifically Season 5 and then eventually replaced by Dick Sargeant for Season’s 6-8. The vast news early in this season is that Sam is going to have a baby! Mediate she’ll be a witch? Do you know what episode Tabitha is born in? If you’re fan, you already know the acknowledge! How snappy was that!? Well… at least it’s this year. I’m Collected on the edge of my seat biting my nails for the release!
Here is some tips for anyone hesitant about which version to buy: The b/w version is for lovers of the modern “feel” of the first two seasons. The colorized version is for the folks who want to search for the first and second seasons of Bewitched in a different diagram. The color intention. The colorization of the first season was actually done heavenly well, and I’m obvious seeing any mistakes in the first season’s colorization, Sony Pictures will improve the quality for season two.
I’ve only seen maybe 3 episodes in season 2 on tv, but I’m definite that having the whole collection on dvd is going to be a treat for my whole family. If there’s anyone who loves the reveal, but is reluctant to engage the residence, you can spy Bewitched on Tv Land or on Broadcast MeTV.

Finally–the enormous Errol Flynn is becoming available on DVD. One can only hope that Warner Bros. will be releasing more classic Flynn titles in the reach future. Except for behind in his career, when Errol’s excessive lifestyle took its toll, we are looking at one of the most intriguing stars to ever grace the “silver cover”.
As other reviews will thunder you, this is a truly memorable World War II drama about American soldiers successfully accomplishing a risky mission against the Japanese in the jungles of Burma, only to face the daunting task of returning to home rotten alive. The film is involving, touching, sunless and uplifting–and if ever there was an actor that men might follow even through the gates of hell, it is Errol Flynn. I agree that this is one of his best performances. At first, we acquire the well-known Flynn bravado, but as the myth progresses, we scrutinize more desperate human qualities and ultimately a world-weary resignation. The scene where he discovers that one of his men has been tortured to death does not really demonstrate the victim–it doesn’t have to–the alarm and disbelief on Flynn’s face says it all.
The film is long–but even when there is no action taking spot, the combination of suspense and sharply-drawn characters keeps a firm grip on your attention. You can feel that oppressive heat–the dense jungle–the biting insects–and the constant threat of a ruthless enemy. In many ways the atmosphere foreshadows another substandard war for Americans, in another Asian jungle, some twenty years later.

The DVD is excellent–the relate is very obvious and stable for a 58-year frail film.
I know that this movie was vilified in the UK for ignoring the gigantic role played by British troops in this theatre of the war. I don’t pass historical judgments–I simply review the film. As such, “Honest Burma” is a remarkable statement, and an suitable vehicle for a truly large star.
Raoul Walsh directed this gruelling, gritty, compelling war fable, produced during World War Two, as the fight in the Pacific was serene in pudgy swing. Errol Flynn, in one of his least glamorous roles, stars as a hard-bitten Captain in charge of an American paratrooper unit that gets sent on a commando mission into Japanese-occupied Burma. They easily conclude their goal of destroying a strategic radar post, but are decimated while trying to return from enemy territory. The film is remorselessly well paced, tense, and manages to transcend the conventions of Hollywood’s WWII combat melodramas: it is propagandistic and uses distinct formulas, but it is also earthy and anxiety-provoking in a plot that the grade-B war films of the era were not. The dilemma of the soldiers — stranded tedious enemy lines and cleave off from their encourage — is made visceral in a draw which few movies manage to squawk, making this film a certain precursor to “Platoon” and “Dark Hawk Down.” It’s bleak tone and realistic portrayal of the foot soldiers, with their dim humor and fatalistic determine, all rings moral. Highly recommended.

It’s what I concept it was, a TV movie (originally aired on ABC) from 1969 written by TV mogul Aaron Spelling and Produced by the sizable Danny Thomas Productions, who produced such classic TV shows as The Dick Van Dyke Note, That Girl, The Andy Griffith Point To, etc,.
This film stars Stephen Boyd, a astronomical character actor/leading man known for his roles in such movies as ‘Ben Hur’ and ‘Fantatstic Voyage’.
It features young newcomers such as Richard Pryor and Billy Dee Williams & football star Rosie Grier in mammoth supporting roles as members of an all-black WW II US Army company (‘B’ Company) in France who are doing the ‘grunt’ work of the Army. Digging latrines, digging graves, dealing with garbage, etc. Basically getting No Respect. Blacks were considered second class citizens during WW II.

The sage shows how Racist Redneck Major Carter (Boyd) is asked to go on a perilous mission to blow up a Dam held by the Nazis and the only company of men to abet enact the task are ‘B’ Company, (the all unlit company) .
They appear sluggish and shiftless to Major Carter, who doesn’t enjoy they can wait on him blow up the dam. Puny does he know, they are more than up for the job. Carter asks their lieutenant in charge for ‘volunteers’, and he picks 6 men, including Pryor, Williams & Grier.
It’s fairly standard TV movie fare, and it’s kind of shapely to scrutinize Pryor and Williams in early roles, as well as vast sunless character actors Moses Gunn & Glynn Thurman (Cooley High) –as well as Susan Oliver, a titanic blonde character actress who appeared in lots of TV drama in the 60’s on shows like ‘Star Trek’, ‘Mannix’, ‘The Wild Wild West’,etc.
It’s a nice forgotten addition to sad cinema, and shows that sunless men in WWII could be objective as dauntless as their white brothers. It’s an engrossing seek at speed relations in the behind 60’s context too, what with the Dim Panther movement and all.
It’s kind of laughable how all the unlit actors have immense afros and a few have mustaches/goatees–not typical of WWII U.S.Army standards, but more like1969 fashion. Pryor sports a dapper red beret throughout the whole fable, too.
I guess I recommend it as a part of nostalgia. Again, The DVD transfer is Repulsive, but viewable.
I was absorbing about this movie primarily to leer the comedic and cinematic development of a young Richard Pryor(pre the Toy and Superman 3 debacles) …the movie in my plan DOES stand the test of time considering that it was made 34 years ago. There were some wintry cameos(a young Paul Mooney in the background) and of course an ensemble cast of some heavy weight & familiar African american actors..i.e..Billy Dee Williams(starring in Brian’s Song the following year), Moses Gunn, Rosie Grier, Glynn Turman and Robert Hooks(a obliging actor and father of famous actor/director Kevin Hooks) . Surprisingly, the movie holds up..an example of this is the reference to the Moses Gunn character being a physics teacher from Howard University who joined the war distress thus surprising the racist Stephen Boyd character for being a learned Sunless man. My main gripe is the transfer…yes..this was a Aaron Spelling made for tv movie but if the movie was remastered it would have been a hell of a lot more exquisite to behold…but again…it WAS worth a gander to peruse some familiar actors during their prime…..it’s worth a discover.

There aren’t too many productions from television that one can call “noble,” but Ken Burns’ The Civil War qualifies. Burns uses photographs, music, speech, maps and historical context to tell the story of the second most formative event in the nation’s history. And since in those days people wrote…diaries, letters, journals…there is the written record not just of the great leaders, the politicians and generals, but of the wives and sweethearts, the nurses and doctors, newspaper editors and farmers. Most of all there are the words of the soldiers. Burns shows the importance and the sweep of the war, but in part he does it through the lives of average people caught up in events they may not have completely comprehended, but which they believed in.

If the words themselves have power, so do the voices. Burns recruited great voices, some actors, some not, to speak the words, distinctive voices that give great resonance to what we see. Julie Harris as Mary Chestnut, Charlie McDowell, a Virginia reporter, as Sam Watkins, Arthur Miller as William Sherman, Jason Robards as Grant, Studs Terkel as Benjamin Butler, Sam Waterston as Lincoln, and many others. He has David McCullough as the narrator. McCullough, an outstanding historian and writer, does a wonderful job. Burns also uses a number of historians to underline key points. Foremost, in my view, is Shelby Foote. Foote is the author of the epic three-volume Civil War. With his Southern accent, common sense and soft irony, he’s a fascinating raconteur.
The program is never dry or dull. It is gripping and emotional. Both sides felt they were fighting for a pure cause. What is particularly touching is that, as a people, we had not yet lost much of the capacity for simple, unadorned, unembarrassed feelings, whether it be patriotism for one’s country or love for one’s wife. I challenge anyone to read this letter from Sullivan Ballou, a 32-year-old soldier in the Union Army, to his 24-year-old wife, and not sit stunned with emotion. Ballou was killed in the first battle of Bull Run a week later.

Camp Clark, Washington
My very dear Sarah:
The indications are very strong that we shall move in a few days-perhaps tomorrow. Lest I should not be able to write again, I feel impelled to write a few lines that may fall under your eye when I shall be no more . . .
I have no misgivings about, or lack of confidence in the cause in which I am engaged, and my courage does not halt or falter. I know how strongly American Civilization now leans on the triumph of the Government and how great a debt we owe to those who went before us through the blood and sufferings of the Revolution. And I am willing-perfectly willing-to lay down all my joys in this life, to help maintain this Government, and to pay that debt . . .
Sarah my love for you is deathless, it seems to bind me with mighty cables that nothing but Omnipotence could break; and yet my love of Country comes over me like a strong wind and bears me unresistibly on with all these chains to the battle field.
The memories of the blissful moments I have spent with you come creeping over me, and I feel most gratified to God and to you that I have enjoyed them for so long. And hard it is for me to give them up and burn to ashes the hopes of future years, when, God willing, we might still have lived and loved together, and seen our sons grown up to honorable manhood, around us. I have, I know, but few and small claims upon Divine Providence, but something whispers to me-perhaps it is the wafted prayer of my little Edgar, that I shall return to my loved ones unharmed. If I do not my dear Sarah, never forget how much I love you, and when my last breath escapes me on the battle field, it will whisper your name. Forgive my many faults and the many pains I have caused you. How thoughtless and foolish I have often times been! How gladly would I wash out with my tears every little spot upon your happiness . . .
But, O Sarah! If the dead can come back to this earth and flit unseen around those they loved, I shall always be near you; in the gladdest days and in the darkest nights . . . always, always, and if there be a soft breeze upon your cheek, it shall be my breath, as the cool air fans your throbbing temple, it shall be my spirit passing by. Sarah do not mourn me dead; think I am gone and wait for thee, for we shall meet again . . .
————–
The program flows over 11 hours on five discs. In addition to the documentary, the discs are stuffed with background information…maps, documents, biographies and additional interviews. This is a superb production and is worth every penny.
Ken Burns has established himself as one of the greats in terms of historical documentaries. The Civil War is Mr. Burns’ greatest work. The attention to detail brings the history to life. Mr. Burns does an excellent job of bringing humanity to the tragic time in America. With the use of solder’s and family letters it is evident what a difficult time it was to be an American. Originally aired on PBS in September of 1990, nearly fifteen years later the series remains the ultimate narrative about the United States darkest time.
The series is finally released on DVD. While the price is a little high the amazing quality of the series makes the cost very reasonable. Ken Burns’ Civil War is required for any Civil War historian’s collection. The series is also a great way for those wishing to learn more about the Civil War. I would recommend this to anyone that loves historical documentaries. It does not get any better than The Civil War – A Film by Ken Burns.
